Water Colour Lighthouse

2016-2017, Student Work

What?

This is the first art lesson I have done with my class this year.  We did a mixed medium piece.  Using pastel and water colours the class followed my step-by step tutorial to create some beautiful lighthouses.  The boys and girls put a lot of effort into their first project and they are very proud of them.

Why?

For the first project of the school year I wanted a project that had a lot of structure.  It was important to me that we not only focus on the art, but also establish the routines and expectations for art class.  The students demonstrated they were able to follow instructions carefully and apply the techniques that were modeled for them.  We learned about the unique properties of both pastels and watercolours.  The students were able to use pastels without smudging and learned that pastel resists watercolours.  They also learned how to create variation in a colours value depending on the amount of water we mix with it.
