Space Invaders Math

What?

This video is a compilation of stop motion videos made by my Grade One class.  The students created animated videos styles after the ‘Space Invaders” video game.  Students had input on what types of ships and obstacles would be in their videos so some of the video are pretty silly and creative.

Why?

This lesson was a creative way to connect addition sentences to animation.  The students were asked to write a series of addition sentences to plan and structure their animation.  They had to assign each obstacle in their animation a point value, and explain how their total score would go up as they destroyed the obstacles.

How?

The students had been working with Stop Motion animation and addition sentences for about a month.  Connecting these two skills was very natural.  They used the template below to create a series of addition sentences, and then animate their problem using the clipart provided.
